Parotid tuberculosis mimicking parotid neoplasm (Mar.2021)
Case presentation
A 50 year-old male presented with a mass in the left parotid region and multiple left cervical lymph nodes. The parotid mass had been present for 2 years. Physical examination revealed a mobile, non-tender mass occupying the superficial lobe of the left parotid gland with multiple enlarged firm and not tender cervical lymph nodes on the left side in submandibular, jugular and supraclavicular regions.
Radiologic investigations revealed a well-defined, solid, mass lesion located in the posterior part of the superficial lobe of the left parotid gland with multiple intraparotid lymph nodes and multiple enlarged pathological cervical lymph nodes.
A provisional diagnosis of a neoplasm of the parotid gland was made and a left near total parotidectomy and left cervical lymph nodes dissection was performed. Postoperative course was uneventful and facial nerve examination was intact.
Histopathologic examination of the specimen was reported as tuberculosis of the parotid gland and lymph nodes. The patient was commenced on antitubercular chemotherapy.
